Junction of Music & History

…that was the theme for the traditional Champagne Gala Brunch for the Southwest Seattle Historical Society held at Salty’s on Alki. But how does that pertain to West Seattle? One could say we live at the “junction of music and history!” Matt Vaughn who started Easy Street Records shared stories about famous musicians who live, record, and jam in Seattle. Such greats as The Ventures, Jimmy Hendrix, Quincy Jones, Macklemore, Brandi Carlisle and Pearl Jam to name a few.  Highlight of the auction was the sale of the rarest of all Eddie Vedder show posters – that of his first official solo show in West Seattle’s Kenyon Hall (attended by only 100 people) in 2008. Bidding went wild and sold for $5,400! This is always a fantastic event. I want to thank the society for keeping the history alive.

A Grand Affair

It was a night of fancy flappers and dapper men as the West Seattle Food Bank held it’s 4th annual Speakeasy at the Sanctuary; a fundraiser for the local food bank that serves over 11,000 people in our community. There was plenty of gambling, tasty hors d’oeuvres, themed cocktails and an auction of frenzied bidding! A wonderful evening for everyone…

That’s the theme for this year’s Champagne Gala Brunch at Salty’s on Alki benefitting the Southwest Seattle Historical Society. This important group promotes local heritage. What could be more important than saving the Old Homestead? Or the Admiral Theater? The Log House Museum is a West Seattle gem!

Great food and enchanting auction items where followed by Connie Thompson’s live interview with Paul Dorpat and Jean Sherrard authors of “Seattle Now & Then: The Historic Hundred”.

I am honored to capture this event year after year and look forward to the next!

A weekend of giving in West Seattle

The Power of Community shines thru during the Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s 2017 Champagne Gala Brunch. community members came together to raise more than $82,000 at Salty’s on Alki on November 4th.

SWSHS Executive Director, Jeff McCord served as Mast of Ceremonies; Ron Hippe was the auctioneer, and special guest Connie Thompson interviews local icon, Jack Miller. Dave Montoure won the Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me contest.

Their goal: preserving West Seattle heritage.

Locals support West Seattle Helpline

West Seattle Helpline

The 8th Annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fall Dinner & Auction raises funds for the West Seattle Helpline’s emergency assistance programs. The nonprofit steps in to offer emergency assistance with rent, utilities, and clothing. Maureen Hershel co-founded the nonprofit. Her husband Gregg Hersholt, local radio journalist and West Seattleite was guest speaker. The Neighbor of the Year Award went to local mail delivery person, David Sochenda.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

West Seattle Helpline held it’s 7th Annual “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” Fall Dinner & Auction was held November 11th at The Hall at Fauntleroy.  It was an event that helped raised money for the many things this great organization works for: providing assistance to prevent evictions and shutoffs; provide bus tickets for medical appointments, job interviews, etc.; clothing for adults and children at The Clothesline. All is all the have served over 3,500 neighbors in need.

It was impressive to see all the ‘local neighbors’ who turned out not only for a fun evening but, for a great cause.

Loving Our Landmarks

It was another successful fundraising event for the Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s 32nd anniversary Champagne Gala Brunch. Local ‘stars’ were out at Salty’s on Alki to help raise money for some of our favorite local West Seattle Landmarks like the Admiral Theater and Alki Homestead. Their latest campaign – “We Love The Junction” – is designed to landmark the Campbell Building (home of Cupcake Royale) built in 1911/1920 and the 1926 Hamm Building, home of Easy Street Records.

West Seattle may be growing by leaps and bounds but there is definitely a desire to preserve our local heritage. Be sure to visit the “Birthplace of Seattle” Log House Museum.

Taste of West Seattle very tasty!

The Hall at Fauntleroy was filled with tasty treats and drinks from some 40 restaurants, breweries, bakeries, wineries, coffee shops, chocolatiers, and specialty food stores as they gathered to deliver the goods to some 500 patrons supporting The West Seattle Helpline at this annual fundraiser. All proceeds from the event help West Seattle residents with rent, utilities, clothing, bus tickets and more.  All images can be viewed here.

What a pleasure photographing the Hope Lutheran School Annual Auction. The theme was based on the Great Gatsby and with some green screen magic I placed them in the heart of Chicago’s roaring 20s.  The guests did some wild bidding on terrific auction items while dining. 0206-Homestead 0085-HomesteadMembers of the community were able to take home a slice of log from the historic 1904 Alki Homestead at this year’s auction benefit for the Southwest Seattle Historical Society. This year’s presentation was “Coming Home to the Homestead, Alki Homestead” held at Salty’s on Alki. Restoration has begun on the famous landmark that was destroyed by fire in 2009. Brother and sister, Catherine Gruye Alexamnder and Rob Gruye told stories of growing up in the Alki Homestead. We all look forward to the rebirth of this much loved Alki icon.
